Justin Peck- In the Countenance of Kings

In today's lesson watched In the countenance of kings by Justin Peck. Once we watched it we discussed our thoughts, feelings and ideas about the piece as well as stating the movements we recognised and choreographic devices we saw. When I watched the piece I felt happy, energised and inspired due to the upbeat music and very dynamic movements. When we all discussed the feelings we felt some other students stated that they felt tense due to the spontaneous nature of the movement. I understand how this feeling can be given by the piece as the movement's direction and formation is very unexpected which can cause the audience to be on the edge of their seats due to not knowing what is coming next. We then discussed the meaning behind the piece. When I watched the piece I interpreted that the meaning was something along the lines of believing in yourself or reaching for your aspirations. I believed this as the piece began at the dancer looking down and gazing in the mirror. I think ...

Creative Task 2

In today’s session we watched the constanance of kings by Justin peck. We looked into his choreographic process in order to make a piece of movement similarly to him. He used drawing and sketching shapes in order to create movement and formations for his dancers. To use this to make a small piece we each drew a shape on a piece of paper anywhere on the page. We could use this to create a map of movement or a step by step movement guide. I used the piece of paper as a map where as I moved across the floor I performed each shape. The drawing of the shapes is shown below. The shapes could be created by the body or you could move around them as if the shape was in front of you. For example, a circle could be performed as I turn or a rond de jamb of the leg in the shape of a circle.I used a mixture of both of these in order to create lots of unique movements for my phrase. The video of the phrase I created is above. I liked this task as it allowed you to repeat movements if I returned to th...

choreographic devices

In today’s session we used the movement and grade we created last week using both our names and our phone numbers and joined another student to create a duet . We linked both solos by adding a few interlinking steps such as a roll to the floor. Once both solos linked together fluently we added choreographic devices such as accumulation and highlights. In my duet I added repetition , embellishment, contrast and retrograde. This made the piece of movement more interesting and I enjoyed watching my piece develop throughout the lesson. I added repetition by repeating a quick and dynamic roll throughout the movement phrase .I added contrast by making my jump quick and snappy and it being following by a slow rond de jamb of the leg. Above is the video I took of my duet I created today . After this task we was given a handout on the personality traits of the zodiac signs. My star sign was seen as energetic , passionate , curious and active and well as spontaneous, aggressive and im...

Creative Task 1

In our first choreography lesson we started off with improvisation. We began this task improvising on the floor and slowly rising to a higher level whilst travelling from one side of the studio to another. This was challenging for me as I am not confident with improvising as I have not done much of this before therefore I am used being following choreographed pieces. After this task we wrote our names in the air with different body parts for each letter. To develop this we added dynamic such as impulse and impact. We repeated the small phrase a number of times to create a small motif which can later be developed in the creation of my solo. I liked this task as it was an easy way to create movement. After that we was given the task of creating movement from our phone numbers. For example, 0 meant roll and 1 meant shift. After we put the movement together we had to think of an adjective and make the movement resemble the adjective. My adjective was excited so I made my movement high in...
