Critical review of Dance piece 1

In today’s blog I will be analysing Justin Peck’s work named Year of the Rabbit. Year of the Rabbit debuted on the 5 th of October 2012. It was performed by New York City ballet at the David H. Koch Theatre, Lincoln Centre in New York. The piece was inspired by the music which was composed by Sufjan Stevens. The name of the music used is called Enjoy your Rabbit which is where Justin Peck took inspiration for the name of the piece. I found the performance engaging and I found the movement unpredictable. Initially when I watched the piece, I noticed how the movement really correlates with the music. For example, the softer and quieter parts of the music are reflected through the through the use of a slower and fluid movement. This also takes place in the quicker and sharper sections of the music as the dancing becomes faster and more powerful. It seems to me that every note made in the music is filled with correlating movement. This is due to the music being the stimulus of the piec...

Final idea

After reviewing all the stimuli in the last choreography session, I have decided to pick the stimulus named Cog head. I was drawn to this stimulus as it was an unusual image which made me produce many ideas which I could use in my final piece. The Idea I have decided to use for my piece is the contrast between natural and mechanical. I chose this idea as it will challenge me due to sharp and angular movements being unusual for me to use. I prefer a soft dynamic when I dance therefore this idea will push me out of my comfort zone. I will portray the idea of mechanical and natural by using two contrasting sections. One section having angular and robotic movements. The other section will have a soft and fluid dynamic. My aim is to make the two sections juxtapose each other dramatically. To help this goal I will choose a piece of music which has a quick and sharp dynamic which then switches to a soft and slow dynamic. In inspiration to Justin Peck’s choreographic process I will sketch som...

Stimuli

In today's session we discussed the ideas and thoughts we created from looking at 8 different stimuli. This will then help us choose a stimuli we like best for our final piece. Now I am going to be showing my ideas of the different stimuli. Firstly I will be starting with the stimulus named human. I noticed while looking at this photo that there were parts missing such as his face. This could show a lack of identity due to distinct features being taken away from him. There is also a sense of isolation as there is only one boy and the dark background allows him to blend into the background. There is smudges on the boys face which could show that the person who drew this purposely removed his facial features. It could also show a sense of sadness as it gives the appearance that the boy may have been crying. The next stimulus I will be discussing is named human 2. When looking at this stimulus I noticed that within the DNA structure on the picture there is a contrast between the lin...

Creative Tasks

Over the past 4 lessons of choreography we have completed a number of creative tasks. For example , last week we did the creative task of creating movement from shapes.  On the first lesson we created a short phrase from creating the shape of our name and phone numbers in the space around us. I found this task quite difficult as it was hard to use other body parts other than my arms. However I did enjoy the task as it was a challenge to be able to create unique movement which was unpredictable for the audience.  On the second choreography class our creative task was creating movement from our zodiac signs. We were given a handout which told us the personality traits of our zodiac signs and we had to create a short solo which showed these traits. My zodiac sign is energetic and spontaneous so it was important for me to include lots of jumps and changes of direction to show this. I found this task fun as it gave me a lot of freedom to create movement. I also found it diffic...
