Final idea

After reviewing all the stimuli in the last choreography session, I have decided to pick the stimulus named Cog head. I was drawn to this stimulus as it was an unusual image which made me produce many ideas which I could use in my final piece. The Idea I have decided to use for my piece is the contrast between natural and mechanical. I chose this idea as it will challenge me due to sharp and angular movements being unusual for me to use. I prefer a soft dynamic when I dance therefore this idea will push me out of my comfort zone. I will portray the idea of mechanical and natural by using two contrasting sections. One section having angular and robotic movements. The other section will have a soft and fluid dynamic. My aim is to make the two sections juxtapose each other dramatically. To help this goal I will choose a piece of music which has a quick and sharp dynamic which then switches to a soft and slow dynamic. In inspiration to Justin Peck’s choreographic process I will sketch some shapes on a piece of paper and then I will make these into movement. I will do this by replicating the shape with my body for moving through the shape as if it was physically in front of me. In order to create more movement, I will use the creative task of improvising to the music I have chosen. I will then pick out the parts I liked. I will repeat this a couple of times and then combine the movements I liked together to create a movement phrase. After this I will develop the phrase by adding choreographic devices, dynamic and space. An example of a choreographic device I will use is repetition. This links to the stimulus as the cogs continuously turn which means they repeat the same movement constantly. I aim to have the movement to mostly lead from the head and shoulders as in the stimulus just the head and shoulders are shown. In the robotic section there will be no stillness as cogs, which are shown in the stimulus, constantly turn. Similarly, in the natural section there shall be no stillness as the muscles and ligaments of the body, also shown in the stimulus, are all connected. This suggests to me that there should be no stillness as the movements will all connect fluidly to replicate the muscles and ligaments of the body. When the audience watch my piece, I would like them to be on the edge of their seat due to the movement being unpredictable similar to Justin Peck’s movement.

  1. Are there any choreographic devices which you want to include in your piece?

    1. I would like to use a range of choreographic devices such as repetition, embellishment and retrograde in order to make the piece more interesting for the audience.

  2. I like the idea of using contrast within your piece with natural and mechanical, what made you decide on this? And what choreographic devices would you include with this?

    1. I decided on this idea as it allows me to use a range of dynamics and it puts me out of my comfort zone. I will include repetition, embellishment and retrograde in order to make my piece more eye catching for the audience.

  3. I really like how you've gone into detail about your ideas and linking them to the stimulus. Apart from repetition, what other choreographic devices might you use? How do they link to the stimulus?

    1. I will use embellishment as it will allow me to show the shape of the ridges of the cogs within my piece of movement.

  4. I like your idea about juxtaposing the two sections of your piece to demonstrate your idea. Could you give an example of two movements that would oppose each other?

    1. Two movements which oppose each other would be a roll on the floor and a jump such as a leap. These juxtapose due to the low levels and high levels of the movements.

  5. you have some great ideas about what you would like to base your piece around and I really like how you have began to plan how you would like to layout your dance relating to your stimulus.
have gone into great detail about your thoughts and ideas based around your chosen stimuli.

why were you most drawn to this stimulus?

I really look forward to seeing your final product.

    1. Thankyou for your feedback.
I was drawn to this stimulus the most as I thought it had the most movement possibility. For example, I can use a range of dynamics to show the two sections of my dance.

  6. You have clearly have some great ideas about your stimulus! They have all been conveyed very clearly in this blog and I am looking forward to seeing your final piece.
Have you thought about any songs that can accommodate for your idea of juxtaposing sections within your dance?

    1. I have yet to find any songs which fit the criteria of a slow beginning and then a contrasting fast ending.

  7. You have thought of some great ideas and explained things with good detail! What emotions would you want to project to the audience? Have you thought of any songs that could help portray your story?

    1. I want the audience to feel on the edge of their seat when watching my solo as my movements are spontaneous. This links to my chosen practitioner Justin Peck as he also aims to have spontaneous movement within all of his pieces. I have not yet thought of any songs. I am still searching for some songs which begin slow and soft and then suddenly switch to a more sharp and aggressive nature.

  8. You have made a good start to your final idea and have included some interesting ideas about the type of movement you would like to portray however I would like you to develop your idea in relation to the stimulus further. Consider what other ideas you could show and what these varied movements could portray? How will the shapes you draw, influenced by Justin Peck’s creative process, relate to your final idea? For further development, consider what research you will undertake to add greater depth to your piece. Think deeper as to how you plan to structure your solo choreography, further discussing music choices and what you hope to achieve/ portray to the audience.

    1. In order to create a deeper meaning within my piece I decided to research into mental health due to the cogs signifying to me that the brain was not working properly. I will show this by using choreographic devices such as repetition to show the idea of dementia. Repetition could show dementia as an individual with this disease could forget they have done something and do it again such as brushing their teeth. I would also use embellishment by performing gesture towards the head and reaches into the space as if I am signalling for help. This will help me portray to the audience a sense of weakness making them feel a sense of sadness.
I will get my peers to draw the shapes for me so that I can interpret them in many different ways in order to show my idea. For example, a circle could be interpreted to show the continuous turning of the cog which I would show my using repetition within my piece.
Now that I am looking into mental health I can see the two sections of my music in a different light. For example, the sharp section of my music could show the confusion and anger often seen within dementia patients. I would show this to the audience by using large jumps and sharp movements.
