Creative Tasks

Over the past 4 lessons of choreography we have completed a number of creative tasks. For example , last week we did the creative task of creating movement from shapes.
On the first lesson we created a short phrase from creating the shape of our name and phone numbers in the space around us. I found this task quite difficult as it was hard to use other body parts other than my arms. However I did enjoy the task as it was a challenge to be able to create unique movement which was unpredictable for the audience.
On the second choreography class our creative task was creating movement from our zodiac signs. We were given a handout which told us the personality traits of our zodiac signs and we had to create a short solo which showed these traits. My zodiac sign is energetic and spontaneous so it was important for me to include lots of jumps and changes of direction to show this. I found this task fun as it gave me a lot of freedom to create movement. I also found it difficult as some traits are hard to show such as jealous and suspicious.
On the third lesson we had the creative task of creating a short solo from shapes which were drawn on a piece of paper. This task had both its challenges and its easy parts. I found it difficult as some shapes were hard to create such as a square. I also found it easy as I used the paper as a map of what shapes I created. This was easy as I could repeat similar movements when I returned to the same space in the studio.
Last choreography lesson we had the creative task of improvisation. We were given the starting objective of rain on a window . We watched a video of rain dripping down a window as inspiration for this and then we began to improvise. After we improvised alone we began to use contact work to connect with our peers whilst still improvising to the idea of rain. This was a tricky task for me as I found it hard to stop repeating the same movements. I will overcome this by watching my peers for movement inspiration. I also found it hard improvising with other people as it was difficult to create contact through the use of body parts other than the hands.I enjoyed this task as it allowed me to practise and become more confident with improvisation as it is a weakness of mine.

Overall, I have enjoyed the creative tasks we have taken part in over the past 4 choreography lessons. I believe they are helping me find new ways to create movement which will help me in the future.

  1. I like how you have stated what you aim to achieve in every creative task, as I find it helps the audience understand the exercise. I like how you have explained why you thought the task were difficult, as now you can focus these weaknesses into strengths.

When doing the raindrop improvisation, what body parts did you move to portray the idea of a raindrop ?

What happened when you joined everyone else, did you find it easier to come up with movements?

Overall, this blog is very detailed into what your task was and very well set out. I can see how much your blogs have improved over the weeks.

    1. When creating the raindrops I mainly used my upper body the replicate the movement of the raindrops as it gave me more possibility for movement.
When I joined the others I found the movement more difficult to create as I had to think about adding other people into my movement.

  2. I can understand why your movements were repetitive as rain is repetitive. Maybe you could have considered how the rain landed on the window which would have needed different choreography to how it rolled down the window. In the duet maybe you could've had body contact as if the raindrops were merging.

  3. I really liked how in your blog you spoke the strengths and weekends you faced when doing the creative tasks. Which creative task did you enjoy the most? When doing the raindrop task what body movements did you use?

    1. Overall I enjoyed the name and phone number task most as I felt the most confident when performing these tasks.
In the raindrop task I use slow and controlled movements such as slow rolls to the floor and high releases.

  4. I really like how you went into detail with each creative task, which one was your favourite task and why? And would you use a similar creative technique when it comes to creating your own movement?

    1. My favourite task was the phone number and name task as I was most proud with my final piece of choreography at the end of those tasks compared to the other creative tasks. When creating my own movement I will use this task as I found it easy and efficient.

  5. I really like how you have given to detail to your thoughts on each week and explained what you thought you found slightly more challenging. From reading this I understood that you have been finding each week slightly easier and you are less nervous for tasks such as improve. I just wondered how you think you have improved over the past few weeks and if there were any tasks in particular that you think you have gotten better at?

    1. I believe my improvisation has improved , despite me still finding this hard, as now the repetition of movements is less frequent as I have found new ways to move throughout the lessons of choreography.

  6. Excellent work! Looking back, have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas? Looking back at your reflective notes, summarise how you responded to each creative exercise. Think about; what did you find easy or difficult, was your movement readable to your audience,, have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas?

    1. Looking back at these processes has allowed me to pick out the ones which I will use in the future. For example, my favourite process was the one where we drew pictures on a piece of paper as I found this the easiest task and I was the most proud of my final piece at the end of that task.
