Stimuli

In today's session we discussed the ideas and thoughts we created from looking at 8 different stimuli. This will then help us choose a stimuli we like best for our final piece. Now I am going to be showing my ideas of the different stimuli.
Firstly I will be starting with the stimulus named human. I noticed while looking at this photo that there were parts missing such as his face. This could show a lack of identity due to distinct features being taken away from him. There is also a sense of isolation as there is only one boy and the dark background allows him to blend into the background. There is smudges on the boys face which could show that the person who drew this purposely removed his facial features. It could also show a sense of sadness as it gives the appearance that the boy may have been crying.
The next stimulus I will be discussing is named human 2. When looking at this stimulus I noticed that within the DNA structure on the picture there is a contrast between the lines and curves. I also noticed how that all the shapes were connected which could cause the movement in the final piece to be fluid. The colours of the shapes fade out as you make your way across the page. This could be replicated in the final piece with the music which could fade out at the end.
The next stimulus I will be discussing is called Landscape. The picture is very dark and the setting seems abandoned and broken which gives the picture an eerie feel. This feeling then could be replicated through the use of music. The road is long which gives the feeling of it never ending and being trapped. However, the road seems to become lighter the further you go which could show a sense of hope. The poor state of the road suggests that nature was to blame which emphasises the power of nature over humans.
The stimulus named pollution gives the feeling of being trapped as the smoke in the picture surrounds the buildings and smothers the sky. The movements in the piece if this stimulus was to be used could be floaty as smoke is a gas. The movements could also be quite grounded as the buildings are all level apart from a couple taller buildings which could then be the highpoints of the piece. There could be a feeling of melting within the piece for this stimulus as the smoke leads to climate change which melts the ice caps. The photo seems quite old fashioned however the power lines in the back show this is a current photo causing anger in society that this is still happening. Anger could be shown in the piece through use of big and sharp movements.
Next is the stimulus named data. In this picture everything is connected which could mean there should be no stillness within the piece. From the lines which connect all the information within data there are small shapes created such as triangles and squares. This could be shown in the piece by creating these shapes in the piece through the use of different body parts. Similarly to Human 2 the lines fade into the background. This could be shown through the use of music as it can fade out at the end for the same effect. There are many numbers around the lines of data which can be created in the space through the use of the body. The movements for this stimuli should be angular to replicate the linear shapes of data.
The next stimulus is names Camera life. I believe for this stimulus there should be a lot of stillness as when a picture is taken you usually stand still until it is taken. The movement could be sudden and sharp to replicate the dynamic of a camera flash.
The next stimulus is named Child gun. The contrast of the innocent children and the violence symbolised through the gun is quite shocking for the audience. This could suggest that the movement should be spontaneous in order to replicate the feeling of shock for the audience when watching the piece. The high walls and gates around the children could suggest that they are trapped. Sharp movements should be used in order to show the sharp and sudden dynamic of a gun shot. The children are in long lines. This could be shown through the use of linear pathways throughout the piece. The sad look on the children's faces could be shown through the use of music.
The last stimulus is named Cog head. An idea for this stimulus is natural contrasting to mechanical. For natural fluid and soft movements could be used whereas for mechanical sharp and angular movements should be used. Everything in the body is linked therefore the movement should be fluid and there should be no gaps of stillness. The fact that the picture only shows the head and shoulders suggested to me that the movement should stem from these body parts. The cogs in the head have ridges which could result in sharp movement to show this. The fact that all the small muscles and ligaments are shown in this stimulus there should be many precise and small movements to show this.

  1. You have given a lot of thought to the different pictures. I was wondering how you would choreograph numbers for the stimuli "Data"? Your ideas for Camera Life sound interesting with the juxtaposition of stillness and then sudden, sharp movements.

    1. I would choreograph numbers within my piece by creating the numbers shown in the image around the space similarly to the creative task we did in a previous choreography lesson.

  2. Did the use of group discussion have an impact on your thoughts? What other ideas and interpretations were discussed during the lesson? Reflecting back, which stimuli were you most drawn to at this moment and why? What drew you away from the other options?

    1. The group discussions widened my thought process of each stimuli. It gave me many more ideas as everyone found a different meaning behind each photo. The stimulus I am most drawn to is the one named Cog head as I would structure my dance into two sections , one being sharp and the other being soft. This would push me out of my comfort zone as I prefer to dance in a more soft and fluid manner therefore the sharp and fast section would challenge me and I love to be challenged.
I found that the stimulus cog head really stood out to me causing me to to be drawn away from the other stimuli.
