Studio Performance

This weeks blog will be based on the review of my work.
I aimed for my piece to have a contrast between both of its sections. I believe I completed this however I could add more contrast by making my movements even more sharp in the second half. This has been a tricky part in the creation of my solo as sharp movements are out of my comfort zone. When watching my piece I wanted the audience to be on the edge of their seat due to this being an aim of Justin Peck who is my chosen choreographer. I feel like I need to improve on this as when I watched back my solo I can see that I anticipated my movements before they came which did not give the spontaneous feeling I had aimed for. In my dance I did not use much of the right side of the stage. I will change this by making my movements bigger and changing the directions of some movements. This will make sure I include all of the space within my piece.
I received a few pieces of feedback after I performed the dance to the teacher. For example, making my movements larger and adding more weight to the movement. When watching back my dance I can see how this is needed as my dance lacks a sense of strength due to the whole piece looking very elegant. I will practise my piece again adding this in whilst recording myself and then I can watch it back and find areas where I need to add more weight or increase the size of my movements. Another piece of feedback I received was to improvise when I forget a section. This is important as I started my piece from the beginning due to forgetting a section. This will make my dance more successful as in assessments I will not have a second chance to perform my solo therefore stopping will ruin the piece.
In the piece i will make sure to keep my energy levels high , especially in the more sharp sections to ensure the audience stays engaged within my movements. However, this will cause me to become tired of the energy is extremely high throughout the whole piece. To prevent this I will create an energy timeline. For example , I will create a graph which shows the levels of my energy throughout the piece . This allows me to plan sections of my dance to catch my breath and this also adds contrast to the piece which keeps the audience engaged.

  1. This is a really well explained blog and you have given yourself ways to improve based on the feedback you received. What strengths did you identify and what positive aspects did you gain from this practice performance? Well done Sadie, you have evaluated your areas for improvement clearly.

    1. Within this performance I found that my musicality was a strength as on the highpoints of my music the movements became larger and more suspended. I found this practise rehearsal gave me confidence for the final assessment which is a positive.

  2. this is a great blog and I can see that you have clearly reviewed your finished choreography.
You have discussed the challenges you have faced and how you will overcome them by improving sections of you dance.
Do you feel you have met all of the criteria when creating your choreography?
maybe you could add a snippet of your piece within this blog.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this well done.

    1. Yes I believe I have as I have clearly shown my stimulus within my solo as well as using my chosen practitioner's choreographic processes to create movement.
After this piece of feedback I have gone back and added a snippet of my dance.

  3. How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process?

Consider the brief and the learning outcomes for your choreography module, do you think you have you met all the criteria required?

This is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:2 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 2:1/1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating well-developed critical thinking alongside arguments as well as critically reflecting your process, showing awareness of own strengths and weaknesses and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.

    1. This studio performance has an impact on my creative process as it made me realise that I needed to add more dynamics to my piece as well as make the movements bigger in some sections to create a contrast between them and the smaller movements.
I think I have met all the criteria in the module as I have clearly shown my stimulus within my piece as well as using Justin Peck as inspiration in my creative process.
