Final perfromance evaluation

In this blog I will be evaluating my final performance of my choreography.

Today, I performed my choreography. I found that this went very well. I am pleased to say that I remembered all the piece despite having little time to create it as well as me performing to my fullest and adding dynamic where needed. One thing I would like to have done differently was the spacing. I found that I stayed towards the front of the space for the majority of my piece when I needed to use the back too. However, I am not too worried about this due to me not having much opportunity to space the piece out before the performance.

Now that my work is complete, I can look back at some challenges I have faced. Throughout these choreography lessons I found that trying new things were tricky for me. For example, I found improvisation extremely tricky at first. I found this hard due to never doing improvisation before. However, now I feel more comfortable improvising. Although I do still find it hard to relax into the movement, I can see a massive improvement especially since I used improvisation in order to choreograph my final piece. Since the first lesson improvisation has been a massive struggle for me therefore, I made it my target to get better at it and I have. From these lessons I have learnt that I need to give things a go before I tell myself I can’t do them.

In the creation of my solo I found myself becoming stuck. I found it hard to not repeat movements too much or find a movement that felt right with the music. I also thought the sharper section to my dance was difficult due to me not being as comfortable with this dynamic compared to a soft and slow dynamic. I found that looking online for inspiration and watching my peers broadened my ideas giving me a way to continue choreographing. I wish I found this earlier in my choreography process as me becoming stuck really slowed me down in the beginning. Now that I know this, I will use this in the future of choreography so that my process in speedy. Another thing I would do in the future of choreography would be giving myself longer to create the piece. I found myself rushing to get the movement finished so that I could clean the work and add some dynamic to it. This made my piece sloppy and I was not happy with the result. This resulted in me changing the steps outside of lesson time.

If I was to perform my choreography on stage, I would add lighting such as a blackout. Once the music starts a spotlight would appear and follow me throughout the rest of my movement. This would add a lonely effect which links to the research I carried out on dementia due to dementia being a very lonely disease due to them forgetting who others such are as their family and friends. I would also make the music fade out. This links to the idea of dementia due to their memory slowly fading out. I think this would be very effective due to the idea of dementia being showed to the audience more clearly.
There are no questions that this process has left me considering.
